The practice of yoga was not originally used as a source of exercise. In fact, people would partake in yoga practice to slow their breathing, relax their minds, to sit in meditation for hours at a time.
Although yoga is an excellent method to strengthen and tone the body, other benefits include, regulating the breath, decreasing heart rate, improving circulation, assisting in deeper sleep, balancing mood, enhancing positive thinking, assisting with stress management, and improving concentration. Yoga therapy is a method to connect the mind, body and soul on many levels. As confidence increases, anxiety and depression decrease, allowing us to live a more peaceful and fulfilling life.
Psychotherapy is working with the brain, the cognitive structures of how we think and understanding they why behind our behavior. However, after becoming a certified yoga instructor in 2006, I have utilized the concepts of yoga therapy within my practice to offer another method of transformation. Increasing awareness of what our body is telling us can allow us to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression, to deal with trauma, to find peace within.
Whether you are an experienced yogi or you have never heard of upward facing dog, I am happy to work with you. I offer a safe, private environment in my office where you can roll out your mat and I will put together a sequence of postures based on what is needed in your life at that time. You will leave with a sketch or handout of what you learned so you can practice at home.
